Larry Wray made Wild Dances palatable for a church performance. He writes:
"The lyrics below are based on the story in the second book of Samuel, Chapter 6, about King David dancing before the Ark of the Covenant as it is carried up into Jerusalem. In the story, David greatly feared to bring up the Ark. The lyrics allude to this."
